Over the last few days I asked myself the question Wouldnt it be great to take advantage of some of these winds that howled through the islands in order to create energy! High-Wind Production Here is the High Wind explanation that I found so exiting: In high wind areas, virtually all commercial wind turbines apply the ‘brake’ and expend the wind energy in the system’s dump load. This is clearly wasteful as high wind conditions represent the opportunity to generate a great deal of power. This is particularly true as the amount of power contained in wind goes up by the power of three i.e. the power contained in 30 MPH wind is twice as much as the power at 24 MPH. Yet most wind turbines shut down once wind speeds exceed 25 MPH. Zefr’s auto-furling mechanism provides it with the opportunity to continue to produce energy at wind speeds exceeding 35MPH. Once the wind speed exceeds 35MPH, unlike other turbines, it does not shut down but continue to produce power even though it auto-furls to protect itself against possible mechanical failures.
