Over the last few days, Ive been writing the rough first draft for my essay on the Pakistani revolution. Ive now got 15,000 words. The crafting process is going very well, beginning to have a clear body and flow to it. The biggest problem has been the sheer quantity of background information thats needed to be covered at the beginning of the essay so that the reader can make full sense of the dramatic, inspiring and heart-breaking events that took place during the uprising and war of 1968-71. As a general rule, a writer needs to hypothesis how well informed their readership is about the issue at hand; this allows them to know how much background info they need to give for it all to make sense. The problem is that most people know little to nothing about Pakistans history, so that no assumptions about prior knowledge can be made whatsoever. Theres no alternative but for me to spend between twenty and thirty pages just on describing and explaining the background info. Only once all of thats finished can the actual events of the revolution be talked about.
