Over the last year, discussion and sometimes debate has occurred here on RMBMX on the topic of- Whats it gonna take to get a first class, indoor, dedicated BMX racing/training facility in Colorado? It will come as no surprise that I have talked with many of you and done a good bit of research to look at business scenarios of how such a facility can come to fruition. Here are the general possibilities: 1) A windfall donor- low probability 2) An investment group- medium probability 3) A municipality partnering with a private group- good possibility, multi-year process and the need for lots of volunteers In each of the business scenarios above, the financial model only pens out with the addition of a membership model. Without digging into details, take the following general assumptions: 1) Property Acquisition- lets say a municipality gifts property and its free. And thats a big maybe. 2) Facility Design and Construction- lets say grants and a municipality or invested steps up and its paid for- a good guess for a large, climate controlled building could run as much as $5M (a conservative estimate) Possible, but would take work. 3) Now the tricky part- ongoing operations and staffing. How do you pay for all the items to keep the place open and running as a training center and races each and every week. Here is where I believe a membership/club business model and/or day use fee is necessary. Much the same as a climbing gym, golf membership, or like the BMX club tracks in Europe and Australia. So the question offered- Is Colorado ready to opt in to a membership/club model to get a world class training and racing facility that is enclosed, climate controlled, and open 12 months of the year? Please comment here as well as respond to the survey that follows. Thanks for the input!
