Over the next few weeks, a lot of people will be talking about the causes of the first world war. The assassination of this foolish man was the trigger, but everyone knew the war was coming. In an era in which ordinary people did not have access to birth control, and a large family provided the only real security in the face of governments that took without giving, it was inevitable that there would be mass killings, and that war would aim to cause deaths in battle and from economic collapse. To me, this is the only real cause of the two world wars. The transition to our world of low fertility and increased personal satisfaction and security is called the demographic transition.
