Over the past couple of weeks Ive got involved with the Theatre Memories project, aimed at capturing oral histories of theatre practitioners in Singapore for SG50. Its work that has required some early mornings, traipsing around Singapore with a camera pack that makes it look like my first day of primary school, and a lot of data wrangling that has brought back all my paranoia about memory cards and hard drives. But it also means that I get to go around Singapore meeting lovely people, all of whom have wonderful memories, stories and perspectives to share. In listening to them talk about their experience in theatre in Singapore, I find passion, commitment and dedication for their art, their work and their craft. Many of these people were throwing themselves into rehearsals and workshops and performances even when there was no money in it, even when everyone else was saying it wasnt real work. As we approach SG50 theres going to be more and more hype over Singaporean history and our evolution from Third World to First. Therell be a lot of emphasis, no doubt, over how we climbed the ladder to be the wealthy nation we are now. But we should never forget that without art, without stories and without the people who are willing to create the art and tell the stories, there would be little meaning behind the shiny skyline and our excellent credit rating. tl;dr COME FRIENDS SUPPORK THIS PROJECT LIKE THE PAGE AND FOLLOW ON TWITTER AND THINGS
