Over the past decade, I have been watching a dangerous phenomenon developing in much of the Middle East, with impact on Muslims worldwide. TV channels supported by corrupt Arab govt have promoted a new breed of televangelist-style of Muslim preachers who only lecture on fluffy or non-controversial topics while remaining deliberately silent on the major issues that greatly impact Muslims and the rest of mankind. Most of those TV preachers inject doses of spiritual or feel-good reminders and talks in order to distract the masses from the real sources of economic, political, and social injustices in that region and the world. They constantly lecture about character and principles, but are the first to compromise or ignore those principles if it means upsetting their source of income and the corrupt governments. It is this class of pseudo scholars and preachers that give religion a bad name. It is this corrupt manipulation of religion to mislead, distract, and subdue people from their God-given right to freedom, justice, and dignity that reminds us that we have to remain vigilant not only of corrupt politicians, but also corrupt pseudo-scholars. Of course, that also make us appreciate the true scholars who preach and practice the principles.
