Over the past few weeks, I have heard from many of you asking that I oppose legislation that would eliminate the state’s current requirement of a 150’ buffer zone between streams and rivers and development. Unfortunately, on October 14th, the Senate voted 27-22 to pass legislation removing this important requirement that state conservationists worked so hard to implement. I will continue to oppose legislation that would jeopardize the health of our rivers and streams. Streamside buffers are simply allowing vegetation and trees to grow along the banks of rivers and streams to mitigate storm-water runoff and protect waterways from pollutants. They also help reduce flooding. SB 1565 was approved in the House and may now be signed into law. In the future, the Legislature will hopefully be able to restore streamside buffers. Here is a story on the legislation from the Harrisburg Patriot News.
