Over the past few weeks Ive spent as much time with Nana as I can. She came to WAGS ~ Westminster Adoption Group and Services as a scared old stray, she slept in her own feces because she had always done so. She wanted to stay in her kennel because she had always lived in box. Steadily and slowly shes been coming out of her shell getting up and wagging her tail when she sees me in the yard ready to charge out the door and give me kisses. I even saw her play with a toy for the first time this week. It turns out Nana does have a second gear and trots around the play yard wiggling her giant butt (I wouldnt actually call it running). Today she eagerly greeted several strangers with tail wags and kisses as if they were old friends. We are still taking it slow around other dogs but she could care less about the barking dogs in the kennels we passed. And she should be an only pet until she can slowly patiently be socialized. She needs lots of rests on our walks but they are getting further between as she slowly gets in shape... Despite the 7 miserable years of being a breeding machine, today I just saw a happy goofy dog that wants to be loved. Sadly of couple days a week is just not enough... Shes very quickly and effortlessly come to trust me and I can only imagine how easily shed fall in love with someone who was scratching her ear nubs everyday! While she is doing better the shelter is no place for her to heal. Going back in her kennel you can see her change, the wiggle is gone and she kisses me nervously as if begging me not to leave her. I know All of the staff at WAGSPETADOPTION.ORG and how hard they work to make life good for each of the dogs. But there are not enough of them to go around.
