Over the past few weeks, I’ve thought a lot about Ferguson and Staten Island. Lennon wasn’t killed by a police officer – of that much we can be sure. But there is a connection. My son, Michael Brown, Eric Garner – three black men who were all treated by police as though they didn’t matter. That their lives, and the circumstances of their deaths, were immaterial. At best, this is as Lennons mother beautifully says: to the police, in North Carolina as well as Ferguson and Staten Island, black lives dont matter. A mere four-day investigation concluded Lennon Lacys death was a suicide despite all evidence to the contrary, including that he was discovered hanging publicly in front of a white trailer park, with bruises and marks on his face and body, next to shoes that were not his own. I CANNOT MAKE THIS CLEAR ENOUGH: the hasty, messy police process that is barely holding itself together in front of minimal national scrutiny SCREAMS, in and of itself, THE OPPOSITE OF #BLACKLIVESMATTER. But I fear and I dread that the FBIs current investigation will mark the reopening of one of the ugliest chapters in United States history. And I hope and I pray it is not so. For the love of God, America, STEP UP and give this sweet, innocent boy the justice he deserves. Give his family and this country some transparency in this case. And if we find ourselves plunged into a nightmare truly hundreds of years old once again, give the criminals HELL.
