Over the past four years Oak Ridge Schools have eliminated several TA positions. Incidentally these four years also happen to be Eby’s tenure as a Co-Chair of the Board of Education. The Board of Education has blamed it on budget cuts. If one looks at the data you will see that they had some very large budget surplus. Over $2.0 Million in 2010-2011. Board of Educations claims are misleading as the data will show. The savings (due to layoff) though miniscule compared to the size of the school budget and surplus has had a huge impact on a teacher’s ability to function and as a result impacted your child’s education. Teaching assistants (TA) are an important part of your child’s education. They help them read, write, and do arithmetic. They also give your child a hug and comfort them when they are distressed. At times TAs help special children (SPEd students) with their individual needs which would include preventing disruption in the class. They help maintain discipline in order to provide a safe learning environment. They are invaluable in your child’s education.
