Over the past month, we have had the opportunity to spend a lot of time with those people. The poor. The underserved. The disadvantaged. The English as a second language. The pet lovers. And the awesome. In animal welfare we often find a divide between us and them, but as Father Gregory Boyle of Homeboy Industries so elequently put it, There is no us and them, just us Those people waited in line for up to 8 hours to obtain life-saving services for their pets. Spay & neuter, vaccinations and tick/flea medication. They waited patiently while hugging their beloved dogs and cats. When it was time to leave them for surgery, some of them had tears in their eyes. When we think about poverty in America, one thing we need to keep in mind is how close many of us are to falling below the line - really one paycheck away. There is no us and them, just us. Lets treat us with dignity and respect and recognize that WE are all in this life-saving business together!
