Over the past six (6) months I have been dealing with a number of case works regarding the unsafe conditions that some private landlords are allowing their tenants to live in. When confronting one particular landlord housing tenants for one of the London Borough Council whose property was condemned by Environmental Health and deemed not safe to live in and was receiving housing benefit for the unsafe flat that was rented to my client for the past six (6) years, he replied and said, “I was a nobody and there is nothing I can do, because he has people on the inside of the council”, and after highlighting this issue in the local newspaper, the local authority moved my client into Temporary Accommodation (TA). The landlord then went on to ‘say, because of the newspaper article, he will block my client and see to it that my client is not rehoused by the council and or by any private landlord in the Borough’. My question to this is can this happen? I reported the matter to the local authority and the police. The case is on-going and because of the above I am carrying out an investigation on rouge landlords in the London Borough area.
