Over the past two days, dozens of Alaskans have asked for my opinion on Congressman Young’s comments. I believe Congressman Young’s statements were uninformed and inappropriate. Alaska has one of the highest rates of suicide in the nation. It is an epidemic. In addition to the alarming rates of suicide in our rural communities, especially among young Alaska Native men, there are troubling rates of suicide in the ranks of Alaska’s military and among our veterans. We need to encourage open conversations about this tragedy—not make hurtful statements. Suicide is a tragedy that strikes too many families in too many Alaskan communities. That’s why I’ve worked hard to increase funding for suicide research and prevention through my Suicide Prevention Research Innovation Act (SPRINT) Act, which would provide funding for the National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH) to conduct targeted research on suicide prevention over the next five years. Because so many people take their own life as a result of depression, I am particularly focused on eliminating the stigma that surrounds depression and mental illness. People who are struggling with depression should not feel ashamed to reach out for help. That’s why I pushed through $15 million in funding for the Mental Health First Aid program, an 8-hour course that helps first responders, educators, students and parents to identify and respond to signs of mental illness. Last year I was honored to receive the Allies in Action Award from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. My wife Deborah is doing her part to spread awareness in her role as co-chair for the Congressional Spouses for Suicide Education and Prevention. She and John Madigan, the Senior Director of Public Policy for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, spent time in Alaska in August 2013 helping to raise awareness and to connect Alaskans with resources. My heart goes out to the families and to the victims. Suicide is a tragedy that strikes far too many Alaskans. By having honest, factual conversations about suicide and mental health, we can help put an end to this epidemic.
