Over the past two years, I have iterated, on multiple occasions, my views on the use of social media by community servants of the American Muslim community. Some have applauded these opinions, while others have criticized them as being a bit too stringent and outdated. As a result of the latter, I have engaged in numerous discussions with various people, including elder scholars, younger scholars, community activists and the laity, in order to better understand how different segments of the Muslim community view the use of social media by community servants. I have attempted to keep my views open to change, and they have evolved during this process. Indeed, when the great scholar Imam al-Shafii (may God be pleased with him) was open to other views and refined much of his School after his mutual discourses with Imam Muhammad al-Shaybani (may God be pleased with him), how could a lowly one like myself not be open to change? After these conversations, I am not sure if I have finalized my views, but I certainly feel they have changed, and they remain dynamic and receptive to further refinement. One of these days, I promise to publish my piece of community servants use of social media that I have been working on for over two years. One area of change: whereas I previously felt it unbecoming for a community servant to put up links to ones own talks on social media, perhaps this is no different than putting up any other message, blog post or tweet. The media may be different, but the content is often the same, be it in written, audio or video form. Given the dynamic of the Muslim community, this may be the only way to reach a generation of plugged-in young Muslims who may not otherwise have access to soul-enriching content. Having been encouraged by sincere individuals whose opinion I value, inshallah, I will periodically share and link to my talks as well. I welcome any constructive feedback and sincere advice. Any good in such affairs is solely from Allah. All flaws and mistakes are undoubtedly mine.
