Over the weekend, Dr Richard Lim texted me from the US that his father, Prof Arthur Lim, had passed away. The sad news brought back much memories. I first met Arthur when I began my career at MOH. He impressed with his intellect and wide interests. Above all, he was a world eminent eye doctor with few parallels. A very successful private practitioner who continued to do research and write books. He was a rare talent. At MOH, I did many great things with him. We started the Eye Department in NUH, completely staffed with private doctors. This was a ground-breaking initiative. The public-private collaboration led us to do larger things, including the setting up of the SNEC, a national eye centre. His contributions extended beyond Singapore, especially to China. I also worked very well with his son, Richard. Richard joined me when we were starting up the NUH. Very bright and highly-motivated. We pioneered many things together at NUH, which subsequently were replicated elsewhere in other public hospitals. The Singapore medical community has lost a great talent. But Arthur’s contributions live on.
