Over the weekend the Army lost another legend. Wild Bill Guarnere of Easy Company, 2/506 Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne passed away on Saturday. Bill Guarnere grew up in South Philadelphia and enlisted in the Army in 1942. On June 6, 1944, Guarnere and the rest of Easy Company conducted the parachute landing at Normandy to assist in the securing of the beaches and neutralization of the German Fortifications there. Guarnere would also participate in the Battle of the Bulge where he would lose his leg and was sent home with the rank of Staff Sergeant. Over the course of his service in World War 2, Guarnere was awarded one Silver Star, 2 Bronze Stars and 2 Purple Hearts. Looking at the fights we fight now, I cant find any reason to shy away from those conflicts, we as Soldiers today have nothing to complain about. Men like Wild Bill Guarnere stood up to one of the strongest Armies the world had ever seen and defeated them soundly in their own backyard. Their actions ensured freedom for millions of Europeans and that fascism would not have a home in Europe. After the war, they came home, built a nation, never asked for sympathy and conducted themselves with honor at all times. We should all strive to be so great and selfless. Soldiers and Future Soldiers, you are a part of the same legacy as this great Soldier. #Honor #Courage #BandofBrothers
