Over the years, I have discovered some of the best ways to make winter exercise more fun. You never want something like the weather to control your exercise. Heres my No Quit Fit apparel guide to healthy winter exercise. Think: comfort and versatility. You want to start your workout almost uncomfortably cool; you’ll be warm within 10 minutes. Aim for a balanced approach to dressing that will leave you warm, but not so hot that you start sweating a lot. Protect those extremities first. Keep your hands, ears, nose and for men, the genital area protected.....VERY OUCH!!! The extremities are the most exposed to cold and wind and the most susceptible to frostbite. In cold weather, the secret is to layer lightweight garments so the clothing works together to keep you dry and warm. High-tech materials like polypropylene and polar fleece are designed to keep body temperature steady, while wicking the moisture away from your skin to the surface layer of clothing. Because these fabrics wick rather than absorb moisture, your clothes dont get soggy and heavy as you sweat. Obviously, this means you need to toss the old pair of sweats and oversized cotton t-shirt you rocked durning the summer. Dress flexibly. Put on your hat and zip up your jacket when youre heading into a cold wind. Take the hat off and partially zip down the jacket when the wind is behind you. The difference can be dramatic....lesson I learned in Norway, along with wearing fishnets which is a story for another day..... Your feet and legs are too busy to get cold. Your legs need much less protection than your torso. Cold feet usually occur standing around, which at No Quit Fit never happens and before marriage, not when Katy and myself are setting a crazy pace...For socks I prefer ones made from Merino wool, which help regulate temperature and moisture, so theyll help you stay warm in the winter. The socks moisture-wicking capabilities will keep your feet dry, which means theyll also stay warm and blister-free. With shoes try to avoid shoes with a lot of mesh, trail running shows are good because they typically are to degree waterproof. The biggest thing is look at the tread, you want aggressive zag with deep cut in to minimize slippage. Everyone has trouble leaving a nice warm bed with the 1000 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets......so durning the winter, one of my all-time favorite things to do is throw my workout clothes in the dryer for three minutes before I head out for a killer WOD. Right when the warmth from the dryer fades, Im already CRUSHING the workout. Im warm, and yes, there is a glide in my stride especially during the first snowfall when Im the FIRST footprints of the morning.
