Over the years, I have met many gracious restaurant owners and discussed food with them. Today I was fortunate enough to add to that illustrious list by spending time with Mohammad Haider Devjianie of Koffie Chalet. My family and I were invited to the soft launch of the KC breakfast. This is not an easy crowd ranging from 2 - 80 in age but everyone enjoys good food and is particular about what they consume. All I can say is, according to my gang, Koffie Chalet is on the right track! We had pretty much everything on the menu offered to us and I barely heard a comment other than positive appreciation. Outstanding items were the french omelette that received universal praise; the chalet beef lovers omelette with a steak cooked to perfection surrounded by a fluffy egg; the cheese and mushroom omelette that was fluffy, tasty and cheesy; the scrambled eggs appreciated for their lightness and taste; pancakes that were enjoyed but the greatest testimonial came from my 5 year old nephew who polished off 5 of them and the yogurt parfait with granola/bananas. There was so much food that I am sure that I have missed something in my report of our experience at KC but I can assure you that there were only suggestions like offering a choice of sunny side up eggs with the steak rather than an omelette! Even the sides were reasonable and the presentation was pleasing to the eye because that is the first thing that you notice when the food arrives. Having read the many reviews about the service at Koffie Chalet, it was no surprise that the attentive waiters were very efficient and accommodating. Fries were nowhere on the menu but when Mr. Ali Masood mentioned them, they showed up and when the other kids wanted them, they were replenished to be devoured and enjoyed by the younguns. I am extremely gratified that Haider Sahib gave my family and I the honour of being a part of the tasting exercise. He sat with each and every group to ascertain their likes and dislikes, asked questions, shared his reasoning for offering various combinations and basically was as nice a person as many posts on this forum have made him out to be! If Koffie Chalet can maintain the quality of the food we had today, it can become a serious player in the breakfast arena. If I can point to one critical success factor, it was the fact that their eggs were fluffy and not runny ... except when required! That is an important fact to consider. My best wishes to Haider Sahib and KC team as they embark on this new venture. Sometimes when you hear good things about someone, it is hard for them to live up to the hype, but that was not the case today. As I said, today I met a gentleman and restaurateur who is exactly what he should be ... gracious, knowledgeable and attentive to his guests. Hats off to you Sir!
