Over the years I have seen many first responders who have been disappointed over various issues. Some have wanted to become chiefs in their department and for one reason or another they were never promoted. Not getting promoted or elected as an officer can be disappointing, especially when the individual believes they deserve it. Other first responders become disappointed because others in there station have let them down. Broken promises, failed appointments, and harsh words from our friends always lead to disappointment and discouragement. We can even be disappointed in ourselves. Think back to the times when we feel like we should have put out a particular fire and failed, or the treatment we chose for a patient didn’t work, or times when we let down our partner during an incident. Life can sometimes become overwhelming and we can easily become disappointed. In life we have to be careful about how we deal with disappointment. Disappointment if not properly dealt with can lead to people who become sad, angry, negative, and not fun to be around. Christian firefighters should use disappointment as an opportunity to grow in their relationship with God. During times of disappointment we should be earnestly seeking the LORD by reading the Bible. We also need to honestly examine our lives in order to ensure that our situation wasn’t brought about by our own actions. In the first chapter Haggai we learn that the people of God were more concerned about their own houses and lands instead of maintaining the temple. God sent a drought to redirect their thoughts and actions toward Him. Life is full of disappointments. Let’s choose to use life’s disappointments to help us to grow closer to God, fully understanding His will for our lives.
