Over the years I worked with him, I saw Stanley launch many incredibly talented artists careers. My favorite was when he played Spain with Jake on his balcony in Topanga, with Jake playing the DiMeola parts on the ukulele. I have no doubt, that this young artist, will also be a global sensation before long. Enjoy. Hang on. FROM STANLEY: I met a beautiful musician on my travels in Europe. Sidiki Diabate a young Kora master from Mali in West Africa… He is the son of the master Toumani Diabate…. Some say the Kora goes back some 800 years and is the precursor to many instruments… We had an opportunity to play together and jam……. The Kora is a 21 stringed West African harp-like instrument which bears a close resemblance, some say to the flamenco guitar, native to the Andalusia region of Spain. The instrument is played in the Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Gambia, Guinea and Guinea Bissau regions and have a known history which span over eight hundred years. The harp like instrument is constructed from a large gourd, or calabash to be exact, which has been cut in half length-ways, gutted and covered either with the hide of a cow or the skin of an antelope to make a resonator. It has a notch or bridge to support the strings which assists with the vibration and helps to circulate the sounds through the air, not unlike a cello or violin. The strings traditionally has been made from strips of antelope hide, however in modern times, strings are generally made from harp strings or fishing lines plaited together in an effort to increase the thickness of the strings.
