Over the years, Ive written to you many times. And youve written me back with thoughtful questions like, Are you the Brad Meltzer who tried to kiss me in fifth grade? and Oh my God, they still make books? Today, though, I want to tell you a story Ive never told before. Back in college, I took an English class called Writing Childrens Books. When it was done, I loved it so much, I asked the professor if I could take the class again. She said yes. And then she said yes again, letting me take it a third and fourth time. Whyd I keep coming back? Because semester after semester, the professor let me tell stories. She let me create. And she let me work on one of the things I love most: Childrens books. Over twenty years later, were now one day away from releasing my very first real childrens books into the world: I Am Amelia Earhart and I Am Abraham Lincoln. I wrote the first one for my daughter. And I wrote it because I was tired of my daughter thinking that reality TV stars and loud-mouthed sports players were heroes. I tell my kids all the time: Thats fame. Fame is different than being a hero. I wanted my kids to see real heroes...and real people no different than themselves. For that reason, each book tells the story of the heros well known deeds, but also the story of the hero when THEY were a kid. We see them as children. So its not just Amelia Earhart and Abraham Lincoln being famous--but them being just like us. Cori will send you all the details tomorrow, including art by the incredible Chris Eliopoulos. But tonight, in this quiet between-time when my kids are asleep and therefore not asking me their own vital questions like, Why would anyone want YOU signing their books?
