Overcoming Fear Whether we are the highest paid actor or actress in Hollywood, Neurologist or a Physicist or just an ordinary human being who struggles to live life every day, we all have our own different set of fears. And no matter how much we try to fight it, it is not everyone who is given the chance to over their fears. Overcoming our fears is one heck of a challenge and could take a very long process. So why do we need to overcome our fears and anxiety if it would take forever before you can tell the whole world that you are no longer afraid? The truth is, we need to overcome these fears because it can hinder our way of life and at the same time is responsible for all our frustrations and failures in life. The most common fears in human are the fear of heights or acrophobia, fear of water or hydrophobia, fear of the dark or nyctophobia, fear of confined spaces or claustrophobia, fear of snakes or ophidiophobia, fear of spiders or arachnophobia and the list goes on and on. How do we overcome these fears? The first thing that you should do is to analyze our fear. Ask yourself if that fear can harm you, if not then there is nothing to fear. Take for example snakes, which are one of my greatest fears, if you see a garter snake, it can’t harm you because it only eats bugs and spiders and if you are bitten, it can’t cause any serious injuries. Unlike rattle snakes that can severely cause serious injuries if you are bitten. So you should avoid it. Second, observe what other people are doing. If you are afraid of riding a roller-coaster or an elevator, take a look at the ages of the people who are riding it. Are you in that same age range? You can also examine your health conditions. Always consult your doctor if you are healthy and at the right age to engage into such extreme activities. This ensures that you can ride a roller-coaster without worrying of getting hurt. Confront yourself of whatever it is you’re afraid off, afraid of spiders? Then try catching one in your basement and hold it in your hand for a long time until the feeling of dreadful is gone. Repeat the process for a couple of times but if you are afraid of the certain actions then remember steps 1 and 2. If your fear is very dangerous, look for a way to end it. In this situation, I would definitely not recommend you of doing the 1st two steps. You may be able to find some safety rules and put yourself in that state wherein you are safe even your greatest fear is in front of you. The most important rule that you should always remember is; DON’T PANIC. For some of us these are just easy steps to follow if you have already conquered your fears. But for those who are just struggling to overcome their fears, this is not that easy. Just by convincing yourself that you can do it is not that easy. Take it one step at a time, and you will get to it overcome your fears.
