Overtime Ends Happy-Lee for Steeldogs Sunday night at iceSheffield and the Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs took on the MK Lightning for the second night in a row. After a 7-2 defeat on the road, the Dogs were looking to bounce back to their form of the previous weekend with the bonus of a full bench to call on. Even before the game began MK were trying to get inside the Steeldogs heads by not leaving the ice at the end of warm up. Callum Pattison came out to politely ask the Lightning players to go back to their dressing room, even saying please didn’t work. Eventually they left the ice so that the Zamboni could get on and cut the ice ready for the game. The first period began with penalties to both teams and on one of them with Payette in the box for an alleged cross check, Emersic fired over Sedlars shoulder to put MK 1-0 up at 4.52. The period didn’t really get going as there was a steady stream of players to the penalty boxes. Neither team really made the opposing net minder work; both were protecting their nets with relative ease. The second period built up some flow and the early exchanges witnessed some more positive forward play from the Steeldogs with decent chances for Ozolins and Payette but no goal. Kostourek went down following a scramble near the Dogs net and Jamieson cross checked Haywood to the head. The MK player got a match for roughing, the Steeldog just two minutes. The pace increased and the Dogs had the better of the pressure but couldnt find the quality or luck to beat Wall and went in still 1-0 down. Straight from the third periods starting face off, Payette received a match for spearing which gave the Steeldogs a 5 minute penalty kill. The PK unit worked hard to grind their way out of the 5 minute kill without conceding. Both teams traded offence and shots on goal through the period with the Steeldogs working hard to wear down Wall in the MK goal. With 8.37 left Curilla went down after a Wood trip and stayed down for a while earning the Dogs captain a match penalty and another five minutes to kill – which again they managed! With less than 3 minutes left Kostourek was called for elbows and this put the Steeldogs on a power play, where they had to do something. The home team started with intent and had a goal washed out by Pering – he’d already blown his whistle to stop play. Seconds later, he was pointing to the back of the net as with 1.46 left, Ozolins had the decisive shot to deliver a deserved equalizer. This took the game to OT. With just 1:23 gone in overtime, Lee Haywood scored the game winning goal and gave the Steeldogs the OT win. Kostourek didn’t share the Steeldogs enthusiasm and took a swing at one of the celebrating players which led to both benches clearing but despite a few punches being thrown, the teams were separated and did eventually complete the post-match handshake. The Steeldogs have a HUGE weekend ahead with the visit of the Guildford Flames on Saturday and Red Rose Rivals Manchester Phoenix on Sunday. Clear the diary and make the trip down to iceSheffield for these two games
