Owl poaching rampant in Nepal HIMALAYAN NEWS SERVICE, Added At: 2014-03-03 10:54 PM NEWALPARASI: It has come to light that at least 2,000 owls are being poached in Nepal every year. A survey carried out by Friends of Nature, an institution based in Kathmandu, in 30 districts has brought this fact to the fore. At a press conference in Amaltari, Nawalparasi, today, Director of Friends of Nature and World Owls Fund Britain’s Nepal representative Raju Acharya said that though the exact number of owls is yet to established, a large number of owls were being poached in the country. Acharya said, of the 871 bird species, owls are worst hit by illegal hunters. He asked the government and stakeholders to protect owls. Owls are found in large numbers in Chitwan and Nawalparasi. Acharya said owl habitats are found up to the altitude of 5,000 metres. At the press conference, Friends of Nature informed Almatari Madhyawarti Home stay Village and Friends’ Nature would organise Owl Festival at Almatari on March 7 and 8. Acharya said that they were planning to hold the festival to create awareness of the need to protect owls. Different programmes are scheduled, including documentaries and photo displays at the festival.
