Ox Cart Fire Update June 27, 2013 9:30 a.m. Contact Fire Information: 208-741-9262 oxcartfire@gmail Start Date Cause Size Percent Containment Helicopters Engines Crews Dozers Total Personnel 6-8-2013 lightning 1151 acres 0 2 3 6 0 156 Summary: The Great Basin Type 2 Team* headed by Incident Commander Tracy Dunford (Team 6), assumed management of the Ox Cart Fire at 6 a.m., June 27. At this time the fire is not threatening human life or safety. There are no residential or commercial properties, critical infrastructure or cultural resources at risk at this time. Yesterday downslope movement high on the south slope of the fire established it in the South Rock Creek drainage with group torching and uphill runs. Two small spots were detected on the east side of the divide near timberline. Light winds yesterday enabled the use of helicopters to work these spots. Runs the fire made on Tuesday hit the ridge tops and the topography held the fire in place. The fire originated between North and South Rock Creeks; 6 miles southeast of Poncha Pass; Sangre de Cristo Wilderness Area; Sangre de Cristo Mountains; Saguache Ranger District; Rio Grande National Forest. Current Situation: As a result of two spot fires on June 24, the fire has spread from the Rio Grande National Forest into the adjoining Pike San Isabel National Forest. This resulted in more aggressive efforts to contain the fire. Crews will do reconnaissance in Pike San Isabel on the east side of the divide to detect any additional established spots. Direct hand line is also under construction on the ridge to the south of South Rock Creek. Weather: A Red Flag Warning combined with a Fuels and Fire Behavior Advisory issued for the Ox Cart Fire area warn of the possibility of near record burning potential in and around the area of the Ox Cart Fire today. While low to moderate fire behavior is expected on the fire today more aggressive fire behavior could occur if terrain and thunderstorm winds align. Dry thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon with gusty winds. Smoke Impacts: While smoke has been light, it has been settling across the divide and into the Arkansas River valley and the Salida Ranger District. Closures: Temporary area closure from North Decker Creek southeast to Nieland Creek including FSR 980 and 982. * The classification of teams as Type 3, 2, or 1 refers to its capability and ability to deal with the complexity of an incident, with Type 1 teams handling the most complex incidents often involving large scale threats to human life and property.
