Oxygen cylinders: the crisis continues 29 July 2013 Release: immediate The Democratic Alliance has formally written to KZN Health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo calling on him to address the legislature on exactly what his department is doing to resolve the crisis of the severe shortage of oxygen cylinders to Emergency Medical Care and Rescue Services (EMRS) depots across the province. After a DA investigation revealed last week that oxygen cylinders had not been delivered to these depots for a fortnight, Dhlomo issued denials and accused the DA if misleading the masses. However, members of the public who called in to East Coast Radio have since confirmed the DA’s claims as truthful; as have many EMRS staffers throughout the province. Health union Hospersa has subsequently also issued a statement calling on Dhlomo to resign for his failure to take this matter seriously. The DA is growingly increasingly concerned with the administration and leadership in this department and has serious questions about Dhlomo’s credibility and whether he even knows what’s happening in his own organization. It is worrying that Dhlomo is more concerned about denying this issue - despite confirmation by staff and the public - than he is about sorting it out. This indicates that he cares more about covering his department’s failures than he does about people’s lives. No trauma patient can be resuscitated without oxygen and stocks across the province are critically low. The DA is appealing to Dhlomo to demonstrate that he takes his job seriously and cares whether people live or die by getting private ambulance services involved provisionally while sorting this crisis out as a matter of urgency.
