Oyate…They Came The Barnes County Historical Society Lecture Series Season 16 Presents: Linda Whitney (VCSU) “Mezzotint; An Old Technique but a New Direction” ” 7PM Thursday March 20th at VCSU Room 356 McCarthy Hall. Linda Whitney is thematically a narrative artist. The images in the large mezzotints were gathered and/or appropriated from history and Hollywood then filtered through her point of view to tell a tale. The images in the small mezzotints are part of The Song of Dyslexic’s Chicken Alphabet Book. She participates in several national and international print portfolio exchanges each year and in 2013, Linda decided to create twenty-four chicken images each representing a chicken breed and a letter in the alphabet. Each edition is dedicated to a friend or family member. The mezzotint process is time and labor intensive. She finds a personal connection to this process through the rocking, gouging, scraping and polishing of the plate. She earns an intimate knowledge of the plate terrain and texture through the tactile plate creation. The smoky and sensual surface quality of the resulting image can only be achieved by this arduous approach. Whitney is professor of art and chair of the department at VCSU. Her mezzotints have traveled throughout the North America, Europe and to Australia, New Zealand, Serbia, Nicaragua, and Russia. Her work has recently been on exhibit at the Clemson National Print and Drawing Exhibition, Clemson University, SC; Pacific League Pressing Matters, Palo Alto, CA; Ink Press Repeat National Printmaking Exhibition, William Patterson University, Wayne, New Jersey; Americas 2013 and America’s 2014 National Works on Paper, Minot State University; Parkside Small Print Exhibition, Parkside, WI; IPE Greendoor Studios, Derby, UK; National Small Works Exhibition, Washington Printmakers Gallery, Silver Spring, MD; Saddleback Art Gallery Exhibition, Mission Viejo, CA; 34th Annual Juried Exhibition, Custer County Art and Heritage Center, Miles City, MT; International Mezzotint Festival, Yekaterinburg, Russia; Free Town Studios, Lafayette, LA; Managua, Nicaragua; Novi Sad, Serbia; and over 250 other exhibitions.
