P.K. : MOVIE REVIEW I’m having a unique problem right now, the problem of plenty. Having just walked out of PK’s first day first show screening, my mind is inundated with ideas, thoughts and particularly praise for the film and above that, for Rajkumar Hirani. My another problem is that how do I write about the movie without giving away spoilers? Though wiki page has already been updated with the plot so it’s no longer a secret but out of respect for this exceptional film I’ll avoid giving out any spoilers. Besides it’s an Aamir Khan and Rajkumar HIrani film so you don’t need any self proclaimed reviewer give you his thoughts, but just for fun, humour me! PK(Aamir Khan, duh!), loosely speaking, is a stranger who comes to town in search for something that he had lost and begins asking questions that nobody had dared ask earlier. You see, PK essentially names the Elephant(s) in the room, metaphorically speaking, that everyone else is ignoring. For us to believe PK’s confusion, he had to be a stranger and the film gets that part spot on. He meets the native Bhairon Singh(Sanjay Dutt) in Rajasthan and the news reporter, Jagat Janani(Anoushka Sharma) in Delhi along the way who help him in his search. The script and the brilliant screenplay by Director, Editor Rajkumar Hirani and his long time collaborator Abhijat Joshi is the real star. The story is novel and the treatment is absolutely precious. It is an ambitious movie and is aiming and wishing for far bigger goals than the 100-300 crores tags because it will be a shame if PK was to be known only for the box office numbers. PK is a social satire and wants to make a statement of profound importance in the current social scenario but that by no means is an indication that PK is overbearing or preachy or that it lacks in the entertainment quotient. Rajkumar Hirani is in the form of his life and he sets up the whole performance like a waltz except, that you are dancing with him and cherishing every moment as you go round and round along. Hirani and Khan never leave you out and keep you constantly in sync with the happenings on the screen. You laugh your heart out at PK’s histrionics and you choke up at his helplessness, why? because though PK is a stranger his sufferings are no different from your own and at many levels PK could have been you. The difference then is the fact that PK asks question about the very basic things that you see but ignore. PK is not educated in the strictest of terms but he has attained the ultimate goal of education, which is to make you think for yourself, ask questions and differentiate the good from the bad. The simple questions that PK puts up are bound to make you think too and the contrast is the seriousness of the question when paired with the simple nature of it. Among actors, Aamir Khan is unlike anything we have seen before and steals the thunder from everyone else. It is a joy to watch him on the screen and marvel at his craft. Take a bow Aamir, we forgive DHOOM 3. Sanjay Dutt for once looks alive and excited about something and we realise what he is capable of in the hands of a director like Hirani. Anushka Sharma manages to hold her own in front of a mammoth star like Aamir and makes her presence felt. Boman Irani, Saurabh Shukla and Parikshit Sahni are well cast and add to the film. PK is a film that we need and we deserve as audience, good then, that HIrani respects his audience and their time and money. He could have easily gone ahead and made 4 or 5 IDIOTS like the current trend and we would have lapped it all up happily but instead he gave us this fantastic movie. Take your parents, take your friends and take your colleagues along because this is one exceptional film that is not just thought provoking but also thoroughly entertaining. In today’s time when films have a shelf life of a weekend and recall value worth the walk till the exit, PK is bound to stay with you long after and I’m sure will inspire some conversations in your circles. Hirani, I’m inclined to say is the present day Hrishikesh Mukherjee and deserves every bit of applaud that I’m sure is going to come his way, I BOW TO YOU SIR! RATINGS: 5/5 What the Ratings mean: 1: AWFUL 2: AVOIDABLE 3: WATCHABLE 4: MUST WATCH 5: MASTERPIECE
