P Yesterday 7 volunteers from Hua Mei went to visit six elders from Hua Mei. Eventhough most of these elders are living alone, they kept their home exceptionally clean one one the elders told us that she did her spring cleaning until 5:00.am. She even marked our visiting date on her calendar. One elder who is living with his mentally retarded sister has one room rented to a Chinese couple who has actually saved his life when he had a fall at home not long ago. All the other elders are living alone in one or two room flats.me elder has her two room flat very tastefully renovated. She converted the extension that the HDB did during the upgrading into a cost dining room. She even shared her love story with us. Her first love was rejected by her father and they parted to have their own families due to parental objections. She was abandoned by her husband when her daughters was 3 and 5. She worked as house maid and seamstress to bring up her daughters. Later her first love found her but she had already lost faith in any man. Thereafter they became soul mates . Though they are both in their eighties one living in Hong Kong and one in Singapore. They would visit each other annually and be guest to each other .
