PAGASA monitors new LPA near Taiwan MANILA, Aug 15 (PNA) -- Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has monitored a low pressure area (LPA) near Taiwan that may enter the country. Weather Forecaster Connie Dadivas said the LPA east off Taiwan is moving eastward which could enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) in the next 24 hours. Even if it enters PAR, it cannot yet affect the country since its still too far. However, she said the LPA might enhance the southwest monsoon that will bring rains over Northern Luzon which is still recovering from Typhoon Labuyo. Dadivas added the LPA has a slim chance of intensifying into a tropical cyclone. Once it strengthens into a tropical depression, she said it will be named “Maring,” the third cyclone to visit the country this month and the 13th this year. Meanwhile, Dadivas said the southwest monsoon continues to affect the western section of Northern and Central Luzon. She said that the regions of Ilocos and Cordillera, Cagayan, Batanes and Babuyan group of islands will experience cloudy skies with light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms. The rest of the country including Metro Manila will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers due to thunderstorms. In its advisory, PAGASA said that moderate to strong winds blowing from the southwest will prevail over Luzon and the coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough. Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the southeast to southwest with slight to moderate seas. PAGASA also said strong to gale-force winds associated with the southwest monsoon may affect the western seaboards of northern and Central Luzon. "Fishing boats and other small sea crafts are advised not to venture out into the sea while larger sea vessels are alerted against big waves," it said. (PNA)
