PAINTING IN TIME & SPACE- PANDIT BIRJU MAHARAJ - My Guru, my energy, a legend who has lighted the path of so many. While learning from Pandit Birju Maharaj, I was one of the few students who would have long intellectual and theoretical conversations with him. On one occasion I asked him about rhythmic patterns and his style of translating them into poetry. Sometimes, many people would view these brilliant interpretations as gimmickry. This is what he said, When I perform there are a range of audiences, many of them are lay people and many others who have the trained eye. I try to perform in a manner that there is food for all.Hindustani rhythm is a fascinating matrix of mathematical vibrations that has the potential of recreating a cosmos...
