Ultimately, this assault shows that the militants greatest fear is not bullets, but pens and literacy, and will galvanize Pakistan and the world to continue in the fight against illiteracy and ignorance. I heard about this attack when I was visiting Central Asia Institute Alaudiin womens literacy center near Kabul, Afghanistan. It was bittersweet moment as I was witnessing the miracle of about 50 women up to age 63 learning to read and write for the first time. We stopped the lesson and said prayers for the families in Pakistan. See photo attached of an elderly woman writing for the first time. A Taliban spokesperson to the media that the army-run school was targeted because “we want them (the Army) to feel the pain of how terrible it is when your loved ones are killed.” The spokesperson may have been referring to Operation Zarb-i-Azb, in which this summer the Pakistan military went into Miram Shah, North Waziristan this summer to flush out the Haqqani network, Taliban, and IMU Uzbek terrorists. Several credible sources report that most of the senior Haqqani, Taliban, and IMU fled before the operation.
