PALESTINIAN TRADE INJUSTICE #NakbaDay Today commemorates 66 year anniversary of the day when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were expelled from their homes and forced to flee their villages. This is a day plastered with injustice, still fresh in the minds of many. Among the atrocities that resulted of this day was the severe trade injustice that exists for Palestinian date farmers. Here are some facts:- - Israel produces over half of the world’s leading variety of dates, the Medjool date. - The majority of these are produced in the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea areas, on settlements which have been classified as illegal by both the UN and the International Court of Justice. - Oxfam’s July 2012 report on the Jordan Valley reveals that Palestinians can use only 6% of the land in the area, while settlers, who account for 13% of the population, have control over 86% of its land. - Sales of these illegally produced dates are highest at particular times of the year such as Ramadaan, when Muslims are breaking their fasts with these unjustly sourced dates. MADE is all about finding long-term solutions to injustice and poverty. Simply boycotting settlement-produced dates could have a devastating impact on the emerging economy of Palestinian farmers employed by these settlers. The only way to support them through this injustice is a complete boycott of illegally produced dates, and an active support of the delicious and ethical, Palestinian medjoul dates. Find out more about fair trade over here bit.ly/1iX3ZYG, and closer to Ramadaan, we will be sourcing Zaytouns ethical Medjoul dates in our own MADE shop: madeineurope.org.uk/shop #SayNoToInjustice
