PARADIGM SHIFT: Imagine putting a child under a harsh examination - TopicsExpress

PARADIGM SHIFT: Imagine putting a child under a harsh examination atmosphere. She comes to you for healing saying she is anxious, gets stomach aches, cant thinking clearly, and feels frustrated, depressed and angry. You dont focus on changing her, instead you focus on changing the strict atmosphere knowing that her difficult experiences are healthy responses to this atmosphere. You see her clearly. Now imagine that neither you nor the child are aware of this strict atmosphere; she simply tells you about her symptoms. If you follow the conventional paradigm, you are likely to treat the anxiety, the stomach ache, etc. In my experience, this is how most of us treat ourselves. In short, we look at our difficulties as a kind of illness to be treated or corrected. Further, the very act of treating ourselves in this way often make our symptoms worse, adding an additional suffering - the sense that something is wrong with us. Dear friends, please consider the possibility that your problems may be less about the things you want to change about yourself, the things you want to heal, and more about the nature of the way you, those close to you, or the culture looks at your difficulties. Consider the possibility that if you could see these problems through new eyes, or if others were able to do so, you would not only become more loving (a healing in itself) but the things you want to heal may also begin to change, perhaps in ways that you never expected. In 20 years of counseling, this is regularly my experience.
