PARDON ME. This will appear self-aggrandizing to some, snarky to others, but…encouraging to fellow teachers who need to be reminded that the fruits of our labors often emerge many years later—especially when our labor has been raising apple trees from seeds. “That poor Brad Bull; he thinks he can teach.” --Comment by a former boss, reported to me by person who overheard it [but very distinctly], and warned me to watch my back. (But it is really a waste of time to look behind you if your are standing in front of a tank at Tiananmen Square.) “I would not have hired you.” –-Same former boss, speaking to me. Portion of an unsolicited message I just received from a former student: “… I guess all this to say you were right and maybe I should have listened.…You were and always will be my favorite teacher. [Your classes are the ones I most remember.] The way you had a passion not just for teaching but for caring about each student was what made you such a great teacher. … I will always be grateful.” Thank you and bless you, dear co-learner. You will go far--but more importantly, you will go well--because you are willing to admit error and grow--an accomplishment of the most important lesson.
