PARENTING SAFARI Like the way naturalists sit and watch the natural behavior of animals in the wild, it is also interesting to watch the natural behavior of parents in Bhutan. There is a tendency for parents to obsessin their kids while they are small and then switch to a sort of hands-off approach when theyre bigger. You can observe this whenever parents are required to attend some function in the school. In all the years weve had school sports, we have not been able to fill the guest tents. Earlier we used to optimistically set up two large tents for the parents only to be repeatedly disappointed with the tiny numbers who showed up. Weve since dropped one tent but we are far from filling even the lone tent we still set up. At our school sports day for the senior students yesterday, we were not disappointed in that our dismal expectations for parent attendance was solidly upheld. Our tent had more empty chairs than guests. As usual. We have about 350 senior students so the 15-20 odd guests would give us a ratio of about 1 parent for every 20 kids. In contrast, last year when we held our first sports day for our new primary wing students, things could not have been more different. Being our first year since opening the primary wing, we had just 40 primary students. But we had close to 100 parents, uncles, aunties, grandmothers and who knows who else! We could not fit them in 2 tents. Our Primary Wing Sports Day this year is on 24th August. We hope that our optimistic expectations in terms of parent numbers will be similarly met!
