PARENTS could be slugged fines of up to $5692 if they hold a large birthday party in a park without a permit, after a controversial local law was floated at the Brisbane City Council last night. The proposed regulation means anyone holding a gathering of 50 or more people may have to pay $300 and give 20 days notice to apply for a permit, depending on certain circumstances. Council’s Parks, Environment and Sustainability boss Cr Matthew Bourke said the rules would be flexible, but Opposition Leader Milton Dick accused the council of creating needless red tape. Cr Bourke said anyone wanting to hold events with more than 50 people in a park, or 20 people in a bushland reserve, would have to apply online to see if their event triggered the permit fee and required further council approvals. He said it would only be larger events, such as where jumping castles may be hired, food sold or caused damage to the park, which would require paid permits and could attract fines.
