PARRENAS TO FIGHT FOR WBO INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE IN THE UNITED KINGDOM By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing WBO Oriental super flyweight champion Warlito Parrenas will face undefeated Belfast, Northern Ireland fighter Jamie “The Mexican” Conlan for the WBO Intercontinental title. Parrenas of the United Boxing Gym in Manila who has looked impressive in recent fights on Viva Sports top-rating weekly boxing show “The Main Event” will travel to Europe for the first time to challenge Conlan on February 28 at the 12,000 seat Odyssey Arena according to Asian Boxing Scene. Parrenas who is 31 has a record of 23-6 with 20 knockouts and has won his last six fights, five by stoppage since losing by a 1st round knockout to tough Mexican Oscar Blanquet in a ten round bout on June 25, 2012 at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo when Blanquet ended the fight in 33 seconds of the opening round with a vicious left hook. Parrenas was at that time fighting out of Japan using the name Wars Katsumata but since being taken over by the United Boxing Gym, he has shown great promise. In his last fight Parrenas won by a stunning 1st round knockout over Indonesian journeyman Hengky Baransano on December 9, 2014 in a successful defense of the vacant WBO Oriental title he won when another Indonesian Junior Bajawa retired in round six on June 7, 2014. Reporting on the Estrella fight Yahoo Sports said super flyweight prospect Jamie Conlan “overcame a bit of a tough start with Mexican Jose Estrella, winning an unanimous decision in an entertaining action fight.” Two of the three judges had Conlan the winner by a margin of 97-93 while the third judge scored it for Conlan 99-92. Yahoo Sports said Conlan “has some future but its unclear how high he can climb” noting that super flyweights ”get dramatically better when stepping from the relatively empty domestic scene in the United Kingdom or even the European scene and into the deeper waters against better fighters from Latin America and Asia, particularly” but said that the Conlan-Estrella showdown was “a good, tough fight and one where he (Conlan) can learn some things.” Conlan who is three years younger than Parrenas is undefeated with a record of 13-0 with 8 knockouts. He won the vacant WBO Intercontinental title with a unanimous decision over Jose Estrella of Mexico after earlier winning the WBO European title with a 7th round TKO over Benjamin Smoes of Belgium whom he dropped in rounds 6 and 7 en route to the stoppage victory. Estrella was a late substitute for Filipino Daryl Basadre who pulled out due to an injury suffered in training two weeks before the scheduled fight with Conlan. philboxing/news/story-102910.html
