PART 1 THE EMMACULATE CALLING It had started as lunchtime talk jest. Yeukai and Varaidzo were Emmah’s former colleagues. They had remained at the parastatal when she moved. With her current work assignment she was frequenting the parastatal a bit more regularly than before. So at times they would sit together during lunch hour in the canteen. Yeukai was a member of the Mainline Church. She irregularly attended church. Varaidzo was a zealous member of the Prophetic Move of God Church, a very high voltage church whose emphasis was on the manifestation of the spiritual gifts especially the prophetic. She was very passionate about the church leaders and always spoke highly of the founder and his wife. Yeukai had problems with that. She would take advantage of any opportune time to express her reservations. “Varaidzo, you won’t believe what I heard on Saturday!’ “What!” “I have an aunt who stays in Kapiri Mposhi in Zambia, slightly more than halfway from Lusaka to Ndola, on your way to DRC.” Yeukai started. “Or Kapiri Mposhi!” Varaidzo suddenly brightened. “You know the place?” Yeukai enquired. “Prophet Gareth was there last week. He had crusades in Ndola and Kapiri Mposhi. He was scheduled to have another in Mumbwa but it was cancelled at the last minute and he came back two days ago.” “So what I heard is true then,” Yeukai responded. “My aunt says there were some fake miracles” “You lie!” Varaidzo immediately rose to the defence of the man of God. “It’s even in the Zambian newspapers”, Yeukai continued. “It was in the Zambia Daily Mail and also Times of Zambia. My aunt actually sent me scanned copes of the newspaper articles. I also checked them online” “Those papers they lie!” Varaidzo’s voice was an octave higher. Yeukai was enjoying this. “It is said that a certain old woman from Kasapato village, whom the village knows very much, came out declaring that she was blind but could now see. She had with her a six year old niece and an eight year old nephew. They all came with her confirming that their grandma was blind but now sees. The Prophet was ecstatic. But all people in the village know that she can see and that she always attends various crusades with the same testimony. Afterwards people give her cash and material help. If your prophet is a man of God why did he not pick it out? “Not only that, your prophet was also pushing people to fall down and claim it was the power of God. At some point he accused a man of resisting the Spirit of God just because the man was resisting his push to fall down. And he declared he is rich and has money but he cancelled the last crusade because they could not afford the costs. “Shuwa Varaidzo, there are so many things written in the newspapers about him. You can check for yourself the newspapers on internet. And my aunt confirms it’s true. She actually knows the old woman. My aunt’s husband works at the district hospital is friends with Central Province Commissioner of Police Standwell Lungu, he will check with him since he also knows a lot of the happenings in the area. And now the newspapers decided to trace him here in Zimbabwe and they said the truth Varaidzo.” Varaidzo did not like this. She came out guns blazing. “Your newspapers will go to hell, the reporters will die this week if they do not repent and apologise. I speak every curse back to sender.” Yeukai was taken aback but would not give up. “Why does your prophet always speak and focus on enemies? Why does your prophet always wish evil and bad on people who do not agree with him? I have not attacked him or you, I am just stating facts that happened at Kapiri Mposhi. Your prophet threatens people who do not agree with him” Varaidzo was incensed. She could not take this nonsense. ‘Fire!’ she was literally breathing fire. “May fire consume you and everyone who speaks against Prophet Gareth and Prophetess Lorcadia!” Yeukai burst out laughing. There was nothing humorous but she felt it necessary to fully spite Varaidzo and her beliefs. This even incensed Varaidzo further and she proceeded to issue a lot of threats and declarations in the name of her prophet. That is when Yeukai had the good sense to text Emmah to come. She foresaw disaster looming.
