PART 39 destiny of a young italian girl by Rose Miletello The Winter season was in effect,and the temperatures would drop down to freezing[ 32 degrees ] during the night. The wise old farmers, would water their plants , heavy the night before a freeze, this will dilute the ice and save the root of the plants, the foliage will be burned , but it would grow new foliage. This was in the month of November, and Nancy Pizzolato was due to give birth. When she got up to cook breakfast, one morning she started having labor contractions Tony wrapped her in a blanket, and put her in the truck, . then he drove Nancy. to [Mama Maggie,s] Tony,s mother had helped a midwife deliver babies before, .Tony was nervous and he drove off to get Doctor Major . Tony was driving so fast, it was around 6am and it was very foggy, He had to drive with his lights on dim. and it slowed him down. When Doctor Major, and Tony had arrived, Nancy had already given birth to a beautiful healthy girl. Little Maggie was her name.[Margaret Pizzolato] Mama Maggie put little Maggie into Tony,s arms, and he was speechless. The baby had light brown hair, and brown eyes. The doctor told Mama Maggie, that she had done a fine job with the delivery. Nancy was so tired, that she fell asleep. In October, Tony had made a wooden crib for the baby, and Mama Maggie made a mattress for it . Nancy had a beautiful baby nursery at their house., just waiting for little Maggie.Since it was so cold outside Nancy and Tony Spent the night at Mama Maggies. Until Nancy gains all of her strength, Tony was going to be there to help her. That day,Mama Maggie, prepared a, wonderful meal. She made a homemade Chicken vegetable soup. ingredients, were .fresh hen , diced potatoes, celery, carrots, corn , onions shallots, macaroni. served with garlic bread Hot hen soup,was delicious, especially during the cold winter months. Little Maggie was born on November 17, 1920, in a small village of Fordoche,La. [the year that Maggie was born] The United States of America, was having a presidential election, [ nominee Warren G. Harding ], his running mate was Calvin Colee Republican party. nomine James M.Cox running mate was Franklin D.Roosevelt democratic party Waren G Harding won the election. Before the election the president in office was Woodrow Wilson. In 1919 . was marked by major strikes in the meatpacking and the steel industries. There were many new inventions on the market , farm equipment with steam engines, . and other fuel high powered machines that was very expensive. Most farmers could not afford to purchase them. Nancy went about her regular routine at the farm house, when little Maggie got older, Nancy taught her how to make bread, cheese, cook, clean house. Little maggie loved the farm animals, her personality was incredible. Nancy would sit down, on the floor with lil Maggie and would tell her stories about Sicily. Maggie was told about an italian polka dance, called the Sco-ta-say She was also told about her great grandmother, who worked in a vineyard. in Sicily for many years until she died. Sometimes she would bring home a small bunch of grapes, for Nancy. When she was a very young girl. Nancy told her that the grapes were green in color, but tasted sweet. Then Nancy told Maggie that her great grandfather was a poor farmer.. The soil was not rich, like American soil and he only had oxen, and a homemade wooden plow. They were lucky if they could produce enough food to eat. This was the reason, that Nancy,s parents came to the United States, was to have a better life.Maggie was enrolled at Fordoche Elementary school, where her cousins went and she completed the 5th grade. Nancy Pizzolato had given birth 6 more times and had a total of seven children Maggie, Lebeau, Katie,,Virginia, Leona, Tony jr, and Josephine. When Nancy,s daughter Lebeau, was almost 13years old, she died from an appendicitis attack.There was much sadness at the Pizzolato home. Lebeau, was a beautiful girl, she was the spitting image of Mama Maggie, Tony,s mother. The child was laid to rest, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Cementary in Maringouin. The village of Fordoche,s first post office was established in 1854, Thomas Farrar was the first postmaster. Families of immigrants started settling in Fordoche after 1890., Many of them were Italian. Nancy and her sister in law remained close friends, and visited each other often. [LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT] Sapina,s daughter big Maggie was born in 1915, and her cousin Nancy,s daughter little Maggie was born in 1920. The two young women, grew up having a close bond with each other.The Pizzolato ladies were very active in church.One year Sapina was ahead of a committee, that set up a saint joseph,s alter for the church. Big Maggie was almost 21 years old., she and her mother Sapina went to people,s houses to collect money to set up an alter. They were in a horse and buggy, and went down valverda road, to the farmer,s houses. When they pulled up at the Paul Miletello,s house, there was a good looking young man named Leon. standing outside. Leon and big Maggie, saw each other for the first time. Leon was mr Miletello,s oldest son. there were 11 children at that residence. This was the beginning of a true love at first sight. The two families, agreed and they courted. through their courtship Salvadore ,Leons brother met, little Maggie the cousin. who was only 16 years old. Leon married big Maggie in January 1937... a few months later Salvadore and little Maggie was allowed to marry. in October 1937. Leon and big Maggie had three children... but his brother Salvadore and little maggie had ten children. Doctor E.L. Major, was still practicing medicine. most of the Miletello children were his patients. episode 40 next
