PASSION – January 26, 2014 Mark 14:34 How we approach our lives matters. We have seen people who “go through the motions” and whose lives reflect what can best be described as the bare minimum. They perform the day-to-day routines of their lives with the same sense of duty and responsibility that allows them to complete what they must, but there is no joy. Sometimes we don’t seem willing to pursue greatness because the chance for failure is always there. Failure hurts. Joy and sorrow are very kindred emotions and being passionate can be risky! We have also seen those people whose drive is absolutely amazing. People who seemed consumed by achieving something, not for the sake of achieving it, because once they do they are on to something else. But those who have a sense of urgency and intensity about what they do. I remember a commercial from years ago encouraging us to live our lives “with gusto.” Gusto isn’t passion. Gusto is a temporary feeling; passion is a lifestyle. Yes our passion has peaks and valleys, but it is an emotion that constantly drives us to act, even when there is a risk. Allow me to give four examples of passion from the life of Christ. I see Jesus cleaning the moneychangers out of the temple with a passion because His Father’s house was being abused. I see Him on the hill overlooking Jerusalem weeping, knowing the destruction that would come in less than seven years to the city and people He loved so much. I read in the Bible where He sweat drops of blood in the Garden of Gethsemane as He anticipated His upcoming crucifixion. I see the passion by which He confronted His disciples at the last supper by demonstrating to them a servant’s heart. And in each of these examples, His passion was followed by action. Prayer Focus Pray today that God would build in you a passion for His purpose, and that His purpose would be fulfilled at Agape, in our city and our county.
