PBA news - ASHTON FORCES HIS WAY INTO TOP FOUR Rob Ashton’s consistent performances on winning Scottish International Open Singles and World Indoor Singles qualifiers in Auckland this month has seen the Wellingtonian lift his ranking into the all important top four, and therefore, a provisional place in the NZ PBA Trans Tasman team to play the Australian PBA in East Cessnock next year, according to the latest NZ PBA rankings released this week. Duane White (Dunedin) and Craig Merrilees (Southland) keep their positions as NZ numbers one and two while form players Ashton and Dunedin’s Aidan Lusby have taken positions three and four of the five man squad. As defending Trans Tasman individual champion, eighth-ranked Murray Glassey (Hawkes Bay) will have an automatic invite into the 2015 team. 2014 team members Ken Walker (Dunedin) and Wayne Stewart (Waikato) are still in strong contention sitting at 5th and 7th respectively in the rankings. 20-year old Elliot Mason (Dunedin) continues to astound racing into the top twenty of the rankings in his debut year and clearly leads the race for Best Rookie after two semifinal appearances last weekend. With Hawkes Bay’s Natarsha Grimshaw not available for the World Indoor Singles qualifying weekend, the position of top woman in the NZ PBA rankings has returned to Southland’s Maree Jones. The next qualifying weekend is August 9th-10th in Auckland, Hamilton, Hastings, Dunedin, Invercargill including a ranking pairs final in Dunedin held over from this month which could further boost Lusby’s points tally, while NZ PBA Finals Weekend will take place at the Heretaunga Club in Hastings over 12-14th September.
