PDP LATEST: Embattled PDP boss may be removed tomorrow Barring any last minute change of plan, the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, may kiss his job goodbye tomorrow. Impeccable sources told National Mirror yesterday that one of the key positions to be adopted during the party’s elders’ meeting holding tomorrow is for Tukur to relinquish his position for peace to reign in the party. National Mirror exclusively gathered that the Friday’s meeting would hold at Akwa Ibom Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja, in the morning. The meeting was called by ex- President Olusegun Obasanjo to resolve the impasse in the party following the decision of former Vice- President Atiku Abubakar and six other governors to walk out of the PDP special convention held at the Eagle Square on Saturday, August 31. At the meeting, the party’s elders will take a decision on Tukur. “The consensus is that Tukur has to go for peace to return in PDP. So, we will agree on his fate. Surely, we will ask him to resign honourably from office. From there, we will ask the aggrieved governors and parties to return to PDP for further reconciliation, ” one of the party’s elders told National Mirror. It was further learnt that after the meeting on Friday, the elders would proceed to the Presidential Villa to brief President Goodluck Jonathan on their decision to do away with Tukur. Expected at the Friday’s meeting are former Vice- President Alex Ekwueme; former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida; a former national chairman of the party, Chief Solomon Lar; former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and former National Security Adviser, Gen. Aliyu Gusau (rtd). Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, BoT, Chief Tony Anenih and Governor Godswill Akpabio are also expected at the meeting. Atiku and seven governors, Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara), Aliyu Babangida (Niger), Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto), Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Rabiu Kwankwaso and Murtala Nyako (Adamawa) had formed a splinter group known as New PDP under the leadership of former national chairman of the party, Alhaji Abubakar Baraje. Stakeholders in the party, including elders, 26 senators and 57 members of the House of Representatives , have since pitched their tent with the Baraje faction. The aggrieved governors have demanded for Tukur’s sack as one of the conditions for peace in PDP. Tukur became PDP national chairman in March 2012. Since then, the party has been riddled by crises. Most of the governors have become uncomfortable with his leadership style. “Tukur may heed the elders’ advice or fight back. If he bows to the decision of the elders, he is likely to officially resign today. If he refuses, an emergency meeting of the National Executive Council, NEC, the highest organ of the party, may be convoked next week to pass a resolution sacking him,” the source said.
