■ PDP likely exit from Abia How much can they sacrifice for votes? Barrack Obama, the American President had referred to Nigeria as a country with strong individuals, but weak institutions. And because we do not have strong institutions, people get away with murder in this country. The reason given by most loyal politicians in Abia State PDP over the failed ward congress election in the state last month was that it had always been done that way. It is a truism that there had never been any true ward congress by PDP since the advent of the current democracy. They went further to say that all those who are in power today were beneficiaries of no proper congress of the PDP, from local government councillors to the governors elected on PDP tickets. They ask why the game must change now. May be it was worst felt in Abia State this time because no government has really been in power for the past eight years. People wondered why a governor who has failed so woefully should be allowed by the leadership of his party to compile the list of would be delegates, endorse a successor, go to the senate and nominate his son as the next speaker of the Abia state House of Assembly. For all these, they say, he put down so much money to the party to cushion the effect. The governor and his son are already bragging and swearing that “OVER THEIR DEAD BODIES” would any other candidate than their anointed Okezie Ikpeazu win the Abia primary election. This is ridiculous and TOTALLY unacceptable to Abia VOTERS in PDP. The questions here are: Why is it that the people don’t matter in our own democracy? How far can a President go in a desperate move for votes promised by governors who are on their way out, especially those of them who are not loved by their people because they failed? Example is Abia State. Why is the President and PDP leader not listening to the people instead of some governors that have failed? Why is PDP allocating elective offices instead of allowing the people to vote in the candidates of their choice? Why must the President trust the out-going governors instead of the masses who will actually vote for him? Is it because the peoples’ votes don’t count, elections rigged or the party takes for granted that it must win with whoever emerges at their primaries? Why should an unpopular governor impose an unpopular candidate because he has all the ward congress delegates to do so? Why is no one in the presidency listening to Abia masses who say they must elect their leader this time because the present governor who was imposed on them has failed after eight years in office? Why won’t President Jonathatn believe his good friend, Prince Authur Eze, who told the world that nothing is happening in Abia State and that the people are suffering while their failed governor wants to go to the Senate? Will the President come to campaign in Abia State, especially Aba, to see things for himself? Won’t he cry for the people of Abia the same way his friend, Prince Authur Eze did? It is said that when the rule of law, or this time, the rule in PDP, does not serve the end of justice, exceptions are and must be made. Please, do so in Abia State because the imposition of leadership will not work this time. The Abia masses say they love and will still vote for President Jonathan who they believe, may remember them next time, but only if he allows them choose their leader. But may we ask, why must it be business as usual in PDP? A good leadership should be such that listens to its people and tries to accommodate them. Abians say no to another imposed, sponsored or endorsed leader. Let the people decide! THAT IS DEMOCRACY.
