PEARLS OF WISDOM FROM THE PROPHET #40 – THE IMPORTANCE OF A PROMISE ------------------ It is reported that the prophet (sallalahu `alayhi wa sallam) said : عدة المؤمن كأخذ الكف A promise made by the believer orally is as strong (and binding on him) as a promise that he makes by striking his hand (on the hand of other person – this was a gesture of absolute agreement or finalization of a treaty or promise back then) [Ref: Shaykh Yaseen al-Fadani narrated this in العجالة في الأحاديث المسلسلة on page 71; Also reported by Shah Muhaddith dhelvi in his `Arbaeen via his sanad back to Abu Taahir – Zayn al-`Abideen - `Hussain - `Ali . Daylami also brought this in Musnad Firdous as said in Kanz ul-`Ummal (3/617); See Jaami` as-sagheer page 59] Such an important element of advice which is more needed in today’s society both in trade as well as daily communication than back then . Indeed in Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him ) is a good example to follow
