PEAT AND FIRE: One of the greatest energy reserves on earth for heating homes is peat. For example, scientists estimated that in Minnesota alone the more than two million acres of bogs contain enough peat to supply that state with energy for more than 50 years. As we saw before, peat is a thick decayed material that lies under a swamp or bog. It consists primarily of decomposed plant matter, but animals that die in the bog also become part of the resulting fuel. It can accumulate in depths from several inches to 30 feet or more. Peat moss provides a good example of how peat forms. As we learned earlier, one of the main plants growing above a peat bog is sphagnum moss. The carpet of living green sphagnum moss on the surface of the bog is made up of healthy plants that continue growing upward, leaving below the old dead and decaying stalks and leaves. These stalks and leaves compress to become the peat moss used by gardeners to enrich their soil. Those who harvest the peat for fuel scrape away the living material from the top of the bog, dredge the peat from the bog, drain off the water, and dry the remains. Dry peat catches fire easily. Sometimes when a drought has dried up the peat bogs, lightining or a careless persons match ignites the dry moss. Such fires may burn for years because they are almost impossible to extinguish. Only a soaking rain can put out a peat fire. As Christians, we are always growing upward toward the sunlight of Jesus love. And when He comes, we will be taken from this world, leaving below the death and destruction of sin to be ignited later into a fire that humanity will not be able to extinguish. Only the creative energy of Jesus-as He makes all things new- will be able to control the power of that fire._A WORD FROM OUR CREATOR_But the heavens and the earth which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment. 2 Peter 3:7
