PERINTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY RECEIVES $12,500 GRANT FROM ROCHESTER AREA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION The Perinton Historical Society is pleased to announce it has been awarded a 2014 Historic Preservation grant in the amount of $12,500 from the Rochester Area Community Foundation. These funds will support the society’s Access for All Audiovisual System project. Formed in 1935 and incorporated in 1937 as a not-for-profit volunteer organization, the Perinton Historical Society’s (PHS) mission is to promote interest in preserving and sharing local history through education and accessibility. The PHS operates and maintains the Fairport Historical Museum, located at 18 Perrin Street in the Village of Fairport. The museum, which is staffed by over 30 volunteers, is open to the public at no cost and offers free tours and monthly historical programs. A majority of these educational programs and events take place in the lower level of the Fairport Historical Museum, which is accessible only by a steep stairwell. Accessibility is an issue for PHS members and the public who attend these programs. The RACF grant gives the PHS the opportunity to purchase an AV system which will permit the physically challenged, as well as overflow crowds, the ability to watch presentations live from the wheelchair-accessible main level of the museum while the programs are being presented in the lower level of the museum. When not in use during live presentations, the AV system will play recorded presentation loops for visitors, permit volunteers to watch training sessions, and loops created with information about the mission of the Perinton Historical Society will increase awareness of the importance of supporting the museum through memberships. “The award of this RACF Historic Preservation grant will allow the Perinton Historical Society to truly move into the digital age by providing members and visitors accessibility to more programs and information about the wonderful resources the PHS and Fairport Museum have available. We are fortunate to have such a collection of materials in our community and we deeply appreciate RACF’s dedication to funding such projects in our region”, Fairport Museum Director and PHS Vice-President Vicki Masters Profitt said. Rochester Area Community Foundation engages philanthropists and community partners to improve our eight-county region by focusing on creating an equitable community and strengthening our region’s vitality. Since 1972, the Community Foundation has awarded more than $333 million in grants and scholarships. For more information, visit racf.org.
