PERIODIC OBSERVATIONS Let Freedom Reign Monday 05.26.14 Freedom is what we do with what is done to us. ~ Jean-Paul Sartre Every time Memorial Day comes around communities come together to celebrate. Without a doubt, the words remember, heroes, and freedom will not go unspoken. For it is the freedom we now have that we celebrate – freedom wrought by people who loved and supported our country even with their very own lives, and for that we do remember them. May this day be not just another holiday – for in my observation Memorial Day celebration has become so hackneyed and overused that we seem to lose the solemnity of the occasion. Let freedom reign! May we continue to cherish and support the freedom that has been passed on to us by past patriots and blood heroes so that those who come behind us will find the same freedom the we have now – freedom which I fear is slowly fading into a freedom of different stripe. There is yet another kind of freedom – the ultimate freedom. While the bondage of the yesteryears had been won, there is yet another bondage thats enslaving humanity today namely, sin. But there was man who came to free us from this bondage – Jesus Christ. Apostle Paul writing about this said, He was handed over to die because of our sins, and He was raised to life to make us right with God... But now you are free from the power of sin... you do those things that lead to holiness and result in eternal life. (Romans 4:25; 6:18, 22 NLT) This is the truth mankind ought to know; and for us who know the truth, the truth that sets one free, may we take Sartres challenge: ...to do what is done to us. John said, ...and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. (John 8:32 ESV) Living, He loved me; dying, He saved me; Buried, He carried my sins far away; Rising, He justified freely forever: One day Hes coming—O glorious day! ~ J. Wilbur Chapman
