PERSONALISE SHOES, Miritis challenge: MY FIRST PAIR OF SHOES Were white Reeboks Grudgingly donated by an aunt To attend a goat eating party With my rich cousins I must have been seven On that day when I was bathed by mom And put on My only Sunday best Off I went joyfully singing Hair combed, legs oiled, Shining. On the way I met my teacher Who just had to ask You look so smart, where are your shoes? I innocently replied I had none But she knew And just wanted to embarrass me But my spirit was high I was going to eat goat meat! My aunt handed me the shoes Strict instructions Wash immediately after party I followed instructions to perfection Left the shoes to dry overnight Outside Only for them to be mauled By her police dogs! The verdict she issued You will never own a single pair You careless daughter of the poor Friend, I only followed instructions! So today aunt, I want you to know Your words didnt define me Neither did your scorn I stopped counting my pairs At fifty And my daughter at two Has no less than twenty. But I honor my first pair They remind me from where I have come And to savour the joy of a pair Of shoes on my feet!
