Dental care is extremely important and hugely underrated. A horses teeth erupt days after birth and continue to grow as the horse ages. When the horse chews the jaw moves side to side creating a grinding effect. Most of the tooth surface grinds away naturally, however, points on the inside of the mandibular teeth an outside of the maxillary teeth will inhibit a complete grinding motion. These points can possibly cause resistance to accepting the bit, unwillingness to move in one direction, head tossing, dropping feed, weight loss and even colic. Points, ramps, impacted caps, and broken teeth are just a few of the issues that might be found on a dental examination. Most horses are maintained well with an annual dental float. Depending on the horses age and results of the examination our doctors may recommend a routine yearly dental or bi annual dental examination.
